What is ICADV?
The Iowa
Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) is a state level nonprofit
organization. Currently 28 direct service domestic violence
programs across the state are members of the Coalition. ICADV
staff members provide training, counseling, community outreach,
program management and technical support for the coalition members,
professionals and the community. ICADV administers seven
programs, including but not limited to, State Certification of
Domestic Violence Programs and Advocates, Legal Assistance to
Victims, and a statewide rural AmeriCorps program.
ICADV's Principles of Unity
The Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence is comprised of people dealing with the concerns of battered women and their families. We represent both rural and urban areas. Our programs support and involve battered women of all racial, social, religious, and economic groups, ages and lifestyles. We oppose the use of violence as a means of control over others and support equality in relationships and the concept of helping women assume power over their own lives. We strive toward becoming independent, community based groups in which women make major policy and program decisions.
It was in the 1960's and 1970's that issues of violence towards women came out from behind closed doors and women started talking about what went on in their lives and their homes. In Iowa, a few women began to organize. They met in their homes, on college campuses, and at work, to talk about violence against their friends, neighbors and women in the state. Safe homes and shelters began to spring up and a social movement began.
